Third Grade Weekly Update
Here is a look at what were working on this week:
Focus Text: The Trail of Cardigan Jones
Essential Question: Why are courts an important part of our government?
CCSS: RL.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. RF.3.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. SL.3.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Unit 1- Addition and Subtraction Patterns
Module 4: Story Problems and Strategies
CCSS: 3.MD.B.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets. 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.3

Religion Standard: PS3.REL.3: Articulate grade appropriate church doctrine, history and moral issues.
Unit: Geography of the Local Region
Focus: Study of geography and how maps represent geographical information
Activity: “Landforms” Posters
CCSS: 3.1 Use physical geography and human geography to tell about people, places and environments. I can use maps, tables, graphs, pictures, and charts to organize information about people, places and environments 3.1.1 I can locate deserts, mountains, valleys, hills, coastal areas, oceans, and lakes in my region.
Unit: Power of Flowers
Mystery Science: Why are some apples red and some green?
Focus: Inheritance, Traits and Selection
Activity: Apple Taste Test
CCSS: 3.LSI.1 – Describe the life cycles of different animals and flowering plants.
Math= Home Connections: P. 15-16 ( Making 10), P.17-18 (Double Digit Addition)
ELA= 2 items as follows:
**Pre-test spelling errors re-written (NEATLY and CORRECTLY!) 5 times EACH (test taken on Monday)
** 1 or more paragraphs using 4 types of sentences (statement, command, exclamation, question). Please make sure it is legible.
