Second Grade Update – Week of 8/26

Good afternoon, Second Grade Families!

What a fantastic first week of school! We have been busy learning routines and procedures, remembering our SLEs, and creating a classroom community that is safe, respectful, and where students are ready to learn. Students came up with ALL of the ideas to make our classroom an effective place to learn and grow. Mrs. Serles and I have enjoyed starting to get to know your children and look forward to our year to come. This is a great group of kids! 🙂

Below are quick updates for next week. Please read carefully!

Uniforms:
For the most part, students’ uniforms are looking good. 🙂 Please double check that your child’s shoes are mainly black, brown, white, or blue. If they aren’t, please look for alternatives. Socks should be white, black, or navy. If your student is wearing a non-uniform outer garment, they must ALSO have on their school sweater or sweatshirt underneath. Thank you.

Headphones:
Please make sure your student has brought in headphones – we will begin using them regularly starting Monday.

Back-to-School Night:
Normally, I will send a weekly email with details for the week to come. I will share information about this and much more at Back to School Night next Thursday, August 29th! Our sessions are either 6:00-6:15 or 6:20-6:35. Feel free to come to either. 🙂 The general session with Ms. Thomas will follow from 6:40-7:00 in O’Brien Hall.

Initial Assessments:
Next week, students will be completing some initial reading assessments with Mrs. Sturlini and/or Ms. Halkias. Students will also take the STAR reading and math assessments on Tuesday and Friday. These are standardized tests and while that can sound intimidating, we make sure to emphasize with the students that all they need to do is their best, and that these assessments simply help teachers understand what they already know and how we, as teachers, can help them learn and grow.

Dates to Remember:

  • Friday, Aug 23 – Ice Cream Social, 6PM
  • Tuesday, Aug 27 – Free dress for Jul/Aug birthdays
  • Thursday, Aug 29 – Back-to-School Night
    • Session 1: 6:00-6:15
    • Session 2: 6:20-6:35
    • General Session in O’Brien Hall: 6:40-7:00
  • Friday, Aug 30 – Noon Dismissal
  • Monday, Sep 2 – No School – Labor Day
  • Tuesday, Sep 10 – Picture Day (students need to wear white uniform shirt/blouse and bring a sweater or sweatshirt)

That’s all for now! Thank you for helping your child get off to a strong start! I hope to see many of you at the Ice Cream Social tonight. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out.

All the best,
Catherine

What Our Families are Saying

"The supportive teachers at SPN played a big role in preparing me for high school and helping me understand what to expect. They encouraged me to ask questions and seek help when needed, which made me more confident in my learning. Thanks to them, I entered freshman year already familiar with many concepts and effective study habits that have helped me stay on top of my work. SPN also taught me valuable life skills that I still use today, helping me succeed academically, build strong friendships, and maintain my overall well-being."
— Tibby Horvath, SPN Class of 2022
"We are very satisfied with the SPN community, something that is important to our family. My children feel safe and comfortable with SPN. Our family feels connected with the SPN community from parents and families to the staff and faculty. My children and we as parents have made healthy and positive relationships with other families from school. We share time outside of school with other families which brings a level of connectedness I don't know if we would have elsewhere"
— SPN Parent
"My children are experiencing community in other ways than just friends and playdates. Faith Families is an example of community, interacting with students from all grade levels, and learning and creating for others outside of SPN. Field trips to Kids Against Hunger or the Alameda Food Bank where they work and see firsthand how their efforts help others less fortunate, for those who are in need of support. Community is not just our SPN ‘bubble,’ and that is what SPN demonstrates and provides– opportunity to explore a bigger community."
— SPN Parent since 2016
