Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Friday! 

Thank you so much for your time this week at conferences! I know life is busy, but it was wonderful to meet with you to support your child’s growth and development in second grade!

While this week was short, our class still managed to learn some new addition strategies and play a round of addition fact toss. In this game, I called out an addition equation and a student’s name. The student caught the ball (as long as my toss was good enough!) and then threw it back to me. We tried to do this as fast as we could. Students are progressing, and mastery of addition and subtraction math facts through 20 is a goal by the end of the year. 🙂  

We also started our first SUPER Magazine. SUPER helps us learn about informational text – noticing the way it is structured, identifying key ideas and details, using pictures, diagrams, and charts to support our understanding, etc. Our theme of this SUPER Magazine is “What’s New?”. 🙂
Please note that Wednesday, October 13th is All School Mass. Students must be in full uniform (sweater or sweatshirt required, no shorts, no free dress).

Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:

  • Reading – Students will continue with our SUPER Magazine! They will practice identifying the main idea of articles as well as details that support that main idea. Fluent reading (reading at an appropriate pace with accuracy and expression) continues to be an area of focus for all students.
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students practice short and long vowel spelling patterns as well as the specific sounds “y” can have in different words. 
  • Writing – Students will revise and edit their completed personal narrative drafts (thank you for your support last week!).
  • Math –The class will delve into place value with three-digit numbers! We will explore the concept of place value, practice exchanging hundreds, tens, and ones, and compare three-digit numbers.
  • Religion – Students continue our chapter about the Holy Trinity – One God in Three Divine Persons and create an art piece to reinforce their understanding. 🙂
  • Science – Continuing our unit about changes to the Earth’s surface over time, students create a model of a canyon to demonstrate the impact of water over time. “Cornmeal Canyons” is always a favorite!
  • Social Studies – Students explore how and why things have changed over time – transportation, school, clothes, technology, etc.

Other Updates for this Week:

  • Field Trip Permission Form! – Please complete and submit by Monday if you haven’t already done so. Thank you!
  • First Reconciliation/First Communion – Please submit your paperwork if your child is going to receive these sacraments. If you have questions, you may reach out to Mrs. Bustos (email forwarded from me on Friday the 1st). Thank you!
  • Personal Narratives – Please make sure your child has submitted their personal narrative if they have not done so. We will be using them on Tuesday. Please also ensure they have brought their writing folder back to school. Thank you!
  • Dates to remember:
    • Monday, Oct. 11th: No School, no Share & Care (Indigenous Peoples’ Day)
    • Wednesday, Oct. 13th: All School Mass
    • Thursday, Oct. 14th: Make-up Picture Day
    • Tuesday, Oct. 19th: Field Trip to Alameda Food Bank!
    • Friday, Oct. 29th: Noon Dismissal – Halloween Parade
