Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, September 3, 2021

Our second week went well.

Students are  beginning to learn the steps for Listening. One way to help your child is to talk with them and reinforce these steps- Look at the person speaking ( make eye contact.) Encourage them to listen without interrupting- mouth is quiet and ears are listening. Clear away any distractions.  These steps are always important and a big step in Kindergarten, but are key when wearing a mask.

We are asking for your assistance in allowing your child to become more independent at school. Students should be able to zip, unzip their backpacks and carry their own backpacks at this age. Some students may need to practice this at home so that they can feel successful at school.

We will be teaching our Schoolwide Learning Expectations this year as part of our Religion classes. These include students becoming Respectful Individuals, Responsible Problem

Solvers, Reverent Catholic Christians and Life Long Learners. More information about this will be coming to you.

This past week students began their morning routines with completing their Daily Practice Sheets. This included practicing writing their numbers and letters. Students then completed “My First Week in Kindergarten” booklet as well as a “Welcome to Kindergarten” booklet. Doing one page a day, students learn how to pace themselves and follow directions doing their best work.

We have begun our SuperKids Unit in English/Language Arts( ELA.).The lessons of the SuperKids Reading Program integrate reading, spelling, grammar and listening and speaking. Daily handwriting imprints letter shapes on the brain. Practice in hearing sounds  ( phonemic awareness) leads to quicker, more reliable sound-letter associations, which leads to better reading and spelling. In phonics practice, children learn to decode ( read) words at the same time they learn to encode(spell) them. The students were introduced to Cass our first SuperKid this past week.

We will begin to send your child’s completed word in an envelope this Friday (September 10). This is called their “Friday Folder.” Please empty the envelope, sign it and return on Monday so we may use it every Friday.

Mrs.Foster will be our first “SuperKid” next week followed by Mrs. Halkias and Mrs.Hall. Each student will have a turn this year!

What Our Families are Saying

"The supportive teachers at SPN played a big role in preparing me for high school and helping me understand what to expect. They encouraged me to ask questions and seek help when needed, which made me more confident in my learning. Thanks to them, I entered freshman year already familiar with many concepts and effective study habits that have helped me stay on top of my work. SPN also taught me valuable life skills that I still use today, helping me succeed academically, build strong friendships, and maintain my overall well-being."
— Tibby Horvath, SPN Class of 2022
"We are very satisfied with the SPN community, something that is important to our family. My children feel safe and comfortable with SPN. Our family feels connected with the SPN community from parents and families to the staff and faculty. My children and we as parents have made healthy and positive relationships with other families from school. We share time outside of school with other families which brings a level of connectedness I don't know if we would have elsewhere"
— SPN Parent
"My children are experiencing community in other ways than just friends and playdates. Faith Families is an example of community, interacting with students from all grade levels, and learning and creating for others outside of SPN. Field trips to Kids Against Hunger or the Alameda Food Bank where they work and see firsthand how their efforts help others less fortunate, for those who are in need of support. Community is not just our SPN ‘bubble,’ and that is what SPN demonstrates and provides– opportunity to explore a bigger community."
— SPN Parent since 2016
