Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,

I hope this message finds you all enjoying the lovely long weekend! 🙂

As the end of school nears, we have some special events planned during these last two weeks! On Thursday, June 10th, we will watch the 8th graders graduate at their Baccalaureate Mass. (We will be in our classroom watching due to Covid restrictions.)

On Friday, June 11th, we will enjoy a walking field trip to Krusi Park. We will maintain all Covid protocols. If anyone would like to donate a prepackaged treat, please reach out to me.

Our End of Year Celebration will take place on Monday, June 14th.  We have a variety of events planned to send off our almost third graders in style!

For the last day of school, St. Philip Neri traditionally has a “Moving Up Ceremony”. We will have our “Moving Up Ceremony” on Tuesday, June 15th in our classroom. Teachers will prepare a send-off speech for their classes and present it on this day. The school will send out a link so that all families can view these speeches.  This is our last day of school and please note, it is a 10:30 dismissal.  There is no Share and Care on this day.

Below is our weekly update:

Focus Areas for Our Learning:

  • Reading – We will continue book club this week with a focus on answering questions about text details, connecting cause/effect events,  and reading fluently (accuracy, pace, and expression).
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will reviewdecoding and encoding /ōō/ words and practice with the suffix -able.
  • Writing – Students will learn about different types of poetry and then write a Haiku about a mystery animal. We will continue working on our reflection projects about second grade as well.
  • Math –Students will extend their knowledge of measurement to practice with word problems.
  • Religion – The class will start learning about the Ten Commandments and how we can relate them to our lives.
  • Science – Students will get to appreciate the environmental needs of different animals with an exploration into the habitats of several species of frogs and toads.
  • Social Studies – The class will continue our unit on the economy and connect the concepts of producers/consumers, goods/services, and the different types of resources to businesses. Students will get to develop an idea for their own business. 🙂

Other Updates for this Week:

  • Favorite Memory of Second Grade – On Wednesday, your child has an assignment to record a 15-20 second video about their favorite memory of our second grade year. (The full assignment is on the matrix.) Once they are ready, it would help if you could please film them and then send the video to me via email. I would appreciate if all videos could be sent by Thursday so that I can use them in a project I’m working on for them. Thank you for your assistance!
  • Dates to remember:
    • May 31st: No School – Memorial Day
    • June 1st: Free Dress for meeting Fun Run goal!
    • June 8th: PTG end of year event
