Second Grade Update – Week of 10/24

Happy Friday!

This week, I want to give a shout out to Mr. Le, Mr. Corriveau, Mrs. Watters, and Mrs. Fisher for accompanying us on our field trip to the library! Thank you so much for joining us! It was a great trip that hopefully helped all students get to know a little more about where to find specific types of books and also how the library works (even behind the scenes!). 🙂

More shout outs to Ms. Ortiz for a spooky art docent lesson and Mrs. Chung, and Mrs. Losk for being wonderful helpers to all your children as they created their Halloween masterpieces! 🙂

Below is our second grade update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:

  • Reading –
    • In reading groups, students will shift to SUPER magazine – back to informational text! Students will focus on identifying text features that support their comprehension as well as determining the meaning of unknown vocabulary.
    • At night, students should read aloud to practice fluent reading skills. Please encourage your child to observe punctuation, read at a good pace, and read the words as they appear in the text (no deletions or substitutions).
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice adding -ed and -ing endings to base words. Students should practice their spelling words for homework so they are prepared for the quiz on Friday.
  • Writing – Students will draft their personal narratives, focusing on writing in complete sentences with a clear beginning, middle, and ending. The goal is a well-written 5-7 sentence paragraph.
  • Math – Students will practice identifying and completing the patterns of different number lines and use the number lines to solve addition and subtraction story problems.
  • Religion – We will discuss the Holy Trinity – one God in three divine persons – with a focus on God the Father. Students will begin learning the Glory Be prayer.
  • Science – This week, we will take a quick detour from our Work of Water unit to explore something a bit more “halloweeny” – our skull! We will discuss what might happen if we didn’t have a skull and then students will create skull masks with their own unique style decorations. Back to our normal unit next week! 🙂
  • Social Studies – Students will explore our fifty states on a map and review the purpose of a map key and a compass rose to interpret and use a map.
