Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Friday!

This week, we said goodbye to our 8th graders with the Ribbon Ceremony and beautiful Baccalaureate Mass. They were lovely celebrations of faith, growth, effort, excellence, and the unique gifts of each student.

Next week is our last full week. It is hard to believe how fast the year has gone by, and while it is exciting that summer is right around the corner, I am already finding myself teary at unexpectedly sentimental moments. For now though, let’s keep on going and enjoy the week to come!

Food Drive Reminder: Many second graders have been busy at home spreading the word with neighbors and family members. Some have raised money with a lemonade stand, and others have made flyers. Well done! Second graders should continue to collect money and/or food donations to show their leadership! I would like 100% participation from second graders. 🙂

Below is our second grade update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:

  • Reading – Students will focus on completing AR reading in class. In their Read Every Day journal, they continue to summarize the books they complete, describing the characters, plot, setting, etc. At night, students should read aloud to practice fluent reading skills. Please encourage your child to observe punctuation, read at a good pace, and read the words as they appear in the text (no deletions or substitutions).
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will decode and encode words with different spellings for /ėr/ (for example, worm, her, bird, learn).
  • Writing – Students will create thank you notes to appreciate some of the people who have positively impacted their school year. 🙂
  • Math – Students will have the opportunity to share their shape art with the class. We will continue to work with word problems in small groups – interpreting, developing solutions, and checking answers.
  • Religion – In Family Life, we will continue our last unit – God’s Gift of Community.
  • Science – Students will confirm their predictions about what animal lives in the cave we initially explored (bats! – shhhh!). Then we will explore where else bats live and compare and contrast the different environments and marvel at the wonder of different habitats and how they support biodiversity in our world! We will touch on the important role we can play in protecting these habitats.
  • Social Studies – Continuing our economics unit, students will identify a business that their family frequents and use their knowledge to identify the good/service it provides, the need/want it fulfills for consumers, the types of resources that business uses, etc.

Other Updates for this Week:

  • COVID Safety– Please continue to be vigilant with the daily health screening. We appreciate your continued diligence – it keeps us all safe!
  • Dates to remember:
    • Tuesday, June 14th – Last Day of School – Moving Up Ceremony; 10:30 Dismissal!

We look forward to seeing our students on Monday!

All the best,
Catherine
