Second Grade Update
Dear Second Grade Families,
Good afternoon and happy Friday!
This week, Mrs. Frentzel led students in the creation of the second grade auction item! Thank you! It looks like it will be beautiful, so stay tuned and make sure you’re registered for the auction on the 26th! 🙂
This coming week, we will celebrate our 100th day of school AND Valentine’s day on Monday, the 14th! Students will get to pass out valentines if they would like (make sure they have enough for the whole class – 29 other students). We will also create necklaces of 100 items and reflect on how we have grown as people and students with a 100 Days Brighter writing activity.
Below is our second grade update.
Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:
- Reading – Students will continue SUPER magazine – Lights Out! We will pay attention to text structure, identify the supporting details of main ideas, and understand cause and effect. Fluent reading (reading at an appropriate pace with accuracy and expression) is always a focus for all students.
- Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will words with a-/ŭ/, -en/ŭn/, and-on/ŭn/ (examples: apart, hidden, from). Students will also practice with suffixes -ful and -less.
- Writing – Students will finish final copies of their narratives and create a title page.
- Math – Students will describe how the unit used to measure an object relates to its length measurement. Students will describe an object’s height in relation to another object. Throughout the week, students will get to share and describe the graphs for their 100 item collections! 🙂 If your student has not turned in their 100 collection and graph, please have them bring it on Monday.Thank you!
- Religion – The class will finish or chapter, We Celebrate Forgiveness, and reflect on the sacrament of Reconciliation as a way of restoring our relationship with God. We will also continue to think about ways we can respond like Jesus would if we hurt someone or someone hurts us. Students received a copy of the Act of Contrition in their green homework folder on Monday. They should be practicing at home throughout the month of February.
- Science – Students will complete a booklet about seed adaptations to understand the various ways seeds can be dispersed – wind, animals, water.
- Social Studies – Students will learn about the three branches of government and practice note taking as a skill. We will continue celebrating Black History Month. Finally, as mentioned in my email on 1/24, students will work on a hero project for homework this week. Each student will complete their square for our hero quilt. Attached is an example of mine, and their paper squares will be in their homework folders on Monday, due Friday. Below is the excerpt from my original email for easy reference:
- “This week, we continued talking about changemakers in our world. Changemakers are those people who work for positive changes in our communities. They have ideas about how our communities can be better and take action to spread the word, get others inspired and involved, and see their ideas through, even when they face challenges or setbacks. These changemakers are heroes and can be any age, race, religion, social group, etc.
- In a couple weeks, your children will be doing a project about a hero for homework. It would be helpful for them to hear about some of your heroes, too! This is also a great opportunity to share about heroes they may resonate with. Ask them who their heroes are. If they love animals – share about someone like Jane Goodall! If they love sports, share about an inspirational sports figure like Jackie Robinson. If your child is moved to stand up for others, remind them of Rosa Parks. If your child isn’t sure children can be heroes, share about Ruby Bridges. 🙂 If your child loves science or space, share about Galileo. There are so many inspirational people in this world! Please help me expand their knowledge of these individuals.”
Other Updates for this Week:
- Valentine’s Day – Students may bring in valentines to distribute on Monday, Feb. 14th. If they choose to do this, they need to bring valentines for the entire class (30 students total, so bring 29). In case your child needs valentines, attached is a printable set featuring the Superkids. 🙂
- COVID Safety– Please continue to be vigilant with the daily health screening. We appreciate your continued diligence – it keeps us all safe!
