Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,

I hope you are enjoying this glorious weather! Below is our weekly update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning:

  • Reading – We will finish our book clubs this week with a focus on asking and answering questions that clarify the text. We will also practice fluent reading skills – reading with accuracy, at a good pace, and with expression.
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will associate c with /s/ and g with /j/ and practice encoding and decoding words. We will also review synonyms and antonyms.
  • Writing – Students will write cards of appreciation to the Alameda Food Bank. I have posted the videos we watched earlier this year in case students want to refresh their memories with how the food bank supports our community. 🙂
  • Math – Students will continue our unit on measurement with a focus on length. We will practice using measuring tools with accuracy and compare distances using different units of measurement. We will continue using graphs to evaluate data as well.
  • Religion – We will continue our chapter on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  • Social Studies – Students will discuss why we use maps and review the key features of maps that help us understand them.

Updates for this Week:

  • Oratorical Fest: Students will recite their selections on Thursday. Please make sure they are practicing at home so that they feel prepared.
  • Seesaw: As Mrs. Serles and I review student work in Seesaw, there are occasions when we may send an assignment back for review/updates. Please remind your student that it is their responsibility to listen/read the comments and ask questions if they do not understand what needs to be updated. They can send me a note on Clever, and I can always help.
  • Dates to remember:
    • January 18: No School MLK Day
    • January 19: Special Guest: Ms. Andie from Alameda Free Library
    • January 21: Students will recite their Oratorical Fest selections in class (please be practicing with them at home)
    • January 27: Spirit Day (TV or movie characters)
    • January 31st: Virtual Catholic Schools Week Mass (9:00)
    • January 31st: Virtual Open House (10:30)
    • February 1st-5th: Catholic Schools Week: Theme: Faith, Service, Excellence

Key Documents/Links (master file also attached for printing):

  • Schedule –
    • Monday – No school in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
    • Wednesday – There will be no morning Zoom meeting as I have a doctor’s appointment. Thank you for understanding.
  • Weekly Assignment Matrix – Students should continue to check off their at-home assignments to ensure they are on track. If anyone has issues printing, please let me know.

I look forward to the week with our second graders!

All the best,
Catherine
