Second Grade Update – Week of 4/17

Dear Second Grade Families,

We hope you’re enjoying a lovely Easter Break!

This week on Friday, we have our field trip to the Lawrence Hall of Science!

  • Field Trip Focus: The diversity of life in our natural world and our role as scientists, inventors, and community members
  • Time: Depart 9am, return by 2:15pm
  • Transportation: Bus, no booster seats required
  • Lunch: Bag lunch and water bottles

Below is our second grade learning update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:

  • Reading –
    • In reading groups, students will continue their Book Club with a focus on plot development and understanding character motivation. As always, there is a focus on reading fluency and speaking and listening skills as we work together in a small group.
    • At night, students should read aloud to practice fluent reading skills. Please encourage your child to observe punctuation, read at a good pace, and read the words as they appear in the text (no deletions or substitutions).
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice with compound words and distinguish between singular and plural pronouns. Students should practice their spelling words for a quiz on Friday.
  • Writing – Students will write a book report using an AR book (fiction) they have read recently. Points of focus will be identifying the setting and main characters, using transition words to connect events, and sharing thoughts about the book with others in a way that piques their interest. 🙂
  • Math – Students will review concepts of measurement using the metric system. The class will also practice with currency – developing fluency counting bills/coins, solving word problems, and making change.
  • Religion – Students will continue to learn about the Mass with a focus on the closing rites.
  • Social Studies –We will learn about the three branches of government and students will practice the skill of note taking. We will also brainstorm questions for our visit with Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft next Monday!
  • Science – Students will practice thinking like gardeners. We will play “Plant Survivor”, a game that encourages students to think about what plants need and how habitats change over time.

Other Updates for this Week:

  • COVID Tests Required to Return to School: Please send results to Mr. Carter by Sunday.
  • AR Reading – Just a reminder – I am encouraging all students to use their AR book for their homework reading time (15 minutes each afternoon/evening).
  • Dates to Remember:
    • Monday, Apr. 17 – Return from Easter Break; First Communion Banner materials will be distributed
    • Friday, Apr. 21 – Field trip to the Lawrence Hall of Science – bag lunch needed!
