Third Grade Weekly Update

Here is a look at what were working on this week:

-Language Arts:

Novel Study: “The Mouse and the Motorcycle”

CCSS: RL.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.  W.3.1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.  RF.3.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.  L.3 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.


-Math:

Unit 7, Module 3 – Fractions as Parts of a Whole and Parts of a Set

Focus:  Introduce three new ways to model, compare and generate equivalent fractions

CCSS:3.NF.A.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when awhole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.  3.NF.A.3b Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

-Religion: May Crowning Ceremony

Religion Standard:PS3.REL.3: Articulate grade appropriate church doctrine, history and moral issues.

-Social Studies:  Unit 9: Economics of the Local Region

Focus: Understanding our Economy, continued…

CCSS: PS3.SS.5: Identify issues that are important in their immediate communities, schools, or living conditions/opportunities for workers, families, women and students. 

-Science: Unit- Weather, Climate and Water Cycle

Mystery Science: How can you keep a house from blowing away in a windstorm?

Focus: Students identify the cause and effect relationship between strong winds and the problems they cause

CCSS: PS3.SCI.2: Quantify and product weather conditions in differing areas and times

-Homework: 

 Math= Home Connections p.131-132 ( Hours to Minutes), p. 133-134 (Telling time to the minute), 

ELA= Writing Task #1 – Chapters 1&2 (Fourth of July invitation)

May 1st – All school mass, May Crowning of Mary
May 9th – Spring concert & Festival of the Arts
May 17th – Talent show; Crab feed free dress
