Second Grade Update – Week of 8/29

Good afternoon, Second Grade Families!

What a fantastic first week of school! We have been busy learning routines and procedures, remembering our SLEs, and creating a classroom community that is safe, respectful, and where students are ready to learn. Mrs. Serles and I have enjoyed starting to get to know your children and look forward to our year to come. What a great group of kids! 🙂

Below are quick updates for next week:

Uniforms:
For the most part, students’ uniforms are looking good. 🙂 Please double check that your child’s shoes are mainly black, brown, white, or blue. If they aren’t, please look for alternatives. Thank you. Lastly, all students will need their blue uniform sweater or sweatshirt for Mass each Thursday, starting 9/1.

Headphones:
Please make sure your student has brought in headphones – we will begin using them on Monday. Thank you!

Back-to-School Night:
Normally, I will send a weekly email with details for the week to come. I will share information about this and much more at Back to School Night next Thursday, August 1st! Our sessions are either 6:00-6:15 or 6:20-6:35. Feel free to come to either. 🙂 The general session with Ms. Thomas will follow from 6:40-7:00 in the church.

Initial Assessments:
Next week, students will be completing some initial reading assessments with Mrs. Sturlini and/or Ms. Kimmerling. Students will also take the STAR reading and math assessments on Tuesday and Friday. These are standardized tests and while that can sound intimidating, we make sure to emphasize with the students that all they need to do is their best, and that these assessments simply help teachers understand what they already know and how we, as teachers, can help them learn and grow.

Quick note from Ms. Andie Cultrera (Librarian, Alameda Free Library):

“Beginning (2nd & 3rd grades) and Intermediate (4th & 5th grades) Book Clubs at the Main Library will begin in September. Each club takes only 12 participants, so we hold a lottery to join. The lottery is open now! Interested students’ families may contact the Main Library at 510-747-7705 or email aflkidsbookclub@gmail.com to enter their child’s name in the lottery. The last day to enter is 8/28. Participants will be notified on or after 8/29. Our peer-driven Children’s Book Clubs meet in person one Tuesday afternoon a month from October until May and are ideal for kids who love to read and talk about books!”
