Second Grade Update – Week of 4/3
Dear Second Grade Families,
Happy Friday!
This week, Alameda Food Bank welcomed us into their facilities, shared their mission of supporting Alameda residents who are food insecure, and allowed our second graders to help by stocking shelves. 🙂 We are reminded that as good citizens and Catholics, we are called to serve others who need help and be grateful for our many blessings. Thank you to all the drivers and chaperones who made this trip possible for us!
Next week, we will observe Holy Week as a school community with Stations of the Cross, presented by 5th grade, and a Seder Meal, led by Kindergarten and shared in Faith Families.
FIELD TRIP – Lawrence Hall of Science
On Friday, April 21, second grade will get to visit the Lawrence Hall of Science! Our focus will be the diversity of life in our natural world and our role as scientists, inventors, and community members. We need 6 chaperones – please let me know if you can join us!
Below is our second grade learning update.
Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:
- Reading –
- In reading groups, students will continue their Book Club with a focus on connecting events within the story and building our understanding of character traits. As always, there is a focus on reading fluency and speaking and listening skills as we work together in a small group.
- At night, students should read aloud to practice fluent reading skills. Please encourage your child to observe punctuation, read at a good pace, and read the words as they appear in the text (no deletions or substitutions).
- Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice with prefixes mis- and dis- as well as compound words. There will be no spelling words this week, so no quiz.
- Writing – Students will finish their alliteration poems and have an opportunity to share them with classmates.
- Math – Students will finish their shape art and write about their piece using math language, incorporating important shape vocabulary and concepts.
- Religion – Students continue to learn about the Mass with a focus on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. A large focus will be on Holy Week and the coming celebration of Easter.
- Social Studies –We will revisit why communities, states, and nations need laws.
- Science – The class will continue to make and document observations about their growing seedlings. What’s happening to those in the light versus those in the dark?
Other Updates for this Week:
- March Enrichment Newsletter!
- Rice Bowl – We will be collecting your donations to the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl project next week. It is greatly appreciated if you can convert your donation into a check made out to C.R.S.
- Summer Tutoring Available – If you feel your student could use a summer boost, please see attached letter from Ms. Kimmerling, SPN’s learning specialist. 🙂
- AR Reading – Just a reminder – I am encouraging all students to use their AR book for their homework reading time (15 minutes each afternoon/evening).
