Second Grade Update – Week of 12/12
Dear Second Grade Families,
Happy Friday!
Thank you to all families who have contributed to the Annual Fund. Currently, second grade has 58% of families participating. Sending out a final request for 100% participation by Monday. Just drop by the office and give Mr. Carter cash, check, or even call in with a credit card over the phone (no fees!). 510-521-0787
Thank you also to families who donated a gift of socks and/or scarves for Adopt-a-Family. This could be a senior’s only gift this holiday season and the act of giving helps children understand the importance of demonstrating generosity and thoughtfulness.
This week, students enjoyed not only the field trip to “A Year with Frog and Toad”, but also a follow up visit with the actor who played Frog! Students also reflected about their favorite songs, scenes, etc. and connected with how Frog and Toad both demonstrated kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness. It was a special experience! Thank you again to all our drivers and chaperones! Without you, it would be impossible to do these trips! I am very grateful. 🙂
Next week, we will enjoy our last week together before break. Mixed in with our learning, we will enjoy our annual Christmas concert on Friday (children should be in the classroom by 6:40pm), building gingerbread houses, creating crafts, as well as a party put on by Mrs. Chung and Mrs. Le on Friday!
Below is our second grade learning update.
Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:
- Reading –
- In reading groups, students will wrap up their book clubs. We will practice summarizing important plot points in the beginning, middle, and end of stories.
- At night, students should read aloud to practice fluent reading skills. Please encourage your child to observe punctuation, read at a good pace, and read the words as they appear in the text (no deletions or substitutions).
- Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students practice associating oo, ew, and ue with /ōō/ (moon, new, blue). Students should practice their spelling words for homework so they are prepared for the quiz on Friday.
- Writing – Students will finish their informational piece about a continent. They will revise and edit before rewriting in their neatest handwriting.
- Math – The class will practice strategies for subtraction of 2-digit numbers when regrouping is required.
- Religion – We continue our chapter about Jesus, the Savior and discuss the crucifixion and resurrection.
- Social Studies – Students will complete our unit, Exploring our World, with an assessment.
- Science – The class will explore how matter changes states. We will connect to our unit focus about the types of materials we use and why certain materials are used for specific purposes.
Other Updates for this Week:
- Oratorical Fest – Information about this will come home on Monday, in your child’s homework folder – please be on the lookout!
- Covid Daily Screening – Please continue to do the daily screening. Your diligence is important and appreciated.
- Dates to Remember:
- Tuesday, Dec. 13 – Free Dress for December birthdays
- Thursday, Dec. 15 – Christmas Concert – 7pm – Student participation is mandatory
- Friday, Dec. 16 – Noon dismissal, NO Share and Care
- Dec. 19 – Jan. 2 – Christmas Break
We look forward to seeing our students on Monday!
All the best,
Catherine
