Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Friday!

This week, Mrs. Frentzel, Mrs. Lane, and Mrs. Jacobs led students in their creation of some adorable cards that will be available at the Spring Art Show. (Thank you!) Be on the lookout for more information about this through the school newsletter and make sure to attend! 🙂

Next week, we will take small groups of students to visit the church where they will get to meet with Father Joel. Father will highlight important parts of the liturgy and share key items and sacred vessels used during the Mass. This will reinforce what we are learning about in the classroom. 🙂

Field Trip Update – Please read this letter about our upcoming field trip to the U.C. Botanical Garden. Thank you!

Below is our second grade update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:

  • Reading – We will continue SUPER Magazine, focusing on determining important ideas, understanding vocabulary by using context clues, and giving/supporting opinions. Fluent reading (reading at an appropriate pace with accuracy and expression) is always a focus for all students. Students are practicing active listening skills during our groups.
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice with tricky “w” words w- and wh- (ex. want, whale, who) and prefixes mis- (meaning “wrong” or “badly”) and dis- (meaning “not”).
  • Writing – Students will create and illustrate their own poems using alliteration, a skill learned this week.
  • Math – Students will practice patterns with 3-digit numbers (counting by 5s/10s/100s from various starting points such as 247, 402, etc.). We will also continue practicing with money word problems, many of which will be two steps. Students will need to think critically about what the question is asking them to solve for and then what steps are necessary to arrive at the correct solution. As always, we will reinforce labeling answers. 🙂
  • Religion – We continue learning about the parts of the Mass, specifically the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist. In Family Life, we will discuss how we can care for the living things of God’s creation.
  • Science – Students should continue caring for and observing their Grass Head (material packets were sent home on Tuesday, 3/22). The observation will continue through 4/8, and then you can take a picture and send it to me via email or print it out at home. Students will share about their experiment in class the week of 4/11.
  • Social Studies – The class will discuss civic and personal responsibilities and tie ideas into our SLE of being responsible. Students will reflect on and write about what it means to be a citizen, a neighbor, and a part of any community.

Other Updates for this Week:

  • Dress Code– Please review the handbook to ensure your child is in the proper uniform. I will be discussing it with students as well.
  • COVID Safety– Please continue to be vigilant with the daily health screening. We appreciate your continued diligence – it keeps us all safe!
  • Dates to remember:
