Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,

I hope you are all safe and well. 🙂 Below is our weekly update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning:

  • Reading – We continue our book clubs this week. Our focus will be on understanding characters, cause and effect, and drawing conclusions. Students continue to practice fluent reading (accuracy, pace, and expression).
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice distinguishing between ea/Ä“/ and ea/Ä›/. They will also practice words with ff, ll, ss,and dd.
  • Writing – Students will get a chance to read their classmates fictional narratives and provide positive, constructive comments.
  • Math –The class will work with story problems about measurement and revisit the concept of equal sets as a foundation for multiplication. We will continue reinforcing familiarity with coins and symbols, and begin working more with money story problems.
  • Religion – We continue Lent with a reflection about how we can get our hearts and minds ready for Easter. Please have your child recite the Act of Contrition prayer to you. They should have it memorized by now.
  • Science – Students learn about the process of melting, about the solid and liquid states of matter, and then discover why plastic was invented.
  • Social Studies – The class will continue to celebrate Black History Month with an article about Harriet Tubman in ReadWorks. Students will also reinforce knowledge of continents and oceans with a game on Friday. 🙂

Updates for this Week:

  • Headphones – As mentioned in my email last Wednesday, please have your child bring a pair of headphones to keep in the classroom. They will need these for the STAR tests this week as well as ongoing activities.
  • Superkids – Please return the “Superkids Hit Second Grade” hardback reader to school by this Friday. Students will receive their new reader on Thursday.
  • Becoming a Writing Superstar – If your child has not turned this worksheet in, please have them bring it on Monday. Last week, I asked all students to watch my video about this activity on Clever so that they had a clear idea about what to do. (It is “Become a Writing Superstar” under the writing section.) Please confirm with them that they have done this. 🙂
  • Dates to remember:
    • February 22nd: STAR Reading
    • February 24th: Sports Spirit Day – Students may wear anything sports related, decorate their space with sports “stuff”, or even use a virtual sports-related background in our morning meeting.
    • February 25th: STAR Math
    • March 5th: SPN Virtual Auction! Please join us!
    • March 12th: End of the 2nd Trimester, Noon Dismissal
    • March 15th: No School – Teacher Development Day

Key Documents/Links (master file attached for printing):

  • Schedule –
    • Monday – Please make sure your child has a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast. We will be taking the STAR Reading.
    • Wednesday – Included in the attached file are the assignments for fictional narrative commenting. Look for your child’s name in the first column. Then look at the two names to the right – your child will read and comment on those narratives (on our Seesaw blog). If you are confused, please reach out to me – please do not guess. Students can comment on additional stories as well, but they need to make sure to do their assigned two first. 🙂
    • Thursday Please make sure your child has a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast. We will be taking the STAR Math.
  • Weekly Assignment Matrix – Students should continue to check off their at-home assignments to ensure they are on track.
  • Fictional Narrative Commenting Assignments – Detailed above (see Wednesday).
  • Become a Writing Superstar worksheet – All students should have now watched the video about this on Clever and know what to do. It is due in class on Friday.

Thank you for your continued support, and I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!

All the best,
Catherine
