Second Grade Update

Dear Second Grade Families,
Thank you so much for the teacher appreciation gift as well as the kids’ signs! That was definitely a special treat on Friday. Thank you. 🙂

This week will be filled with fun events! Not only is Valentine’s Day approaching, but the 100th day of school is on Thursday!

For Valentine’s Day, we will celebrate with “pink, red, and white free dress” on Thursday as well as a few special activities on Friday’s Zoom, including a scavenger hunt (pink and red items around the house) and cookie decorating (supplies will be provided). Please hold off on talking about these activities with your child – we want to surprise them this week!

No Valentine’s Card Exchange – We will not have the children exchange Valentine’s cards as they would traditionally. With safety protocols and procedures, it is a challenge I do not want to take on, so please do not have your child bring in cards. Thank you for understanding.
Below is our weekly update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning:

  • Reading – We will finish SUPER Magazine this week with a focus on making connections and understanding cause and effect. We will also practice recalling details and summarizing in our own words.
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice using dictionaries to determine the meaning of unknown words. We will also practice with the word families: -īld, -īnd, -ōld, -ōst.
  • Writing – Students continue working through the writing process and will complete their fictional narrative drafts, including revising and editing.
  • Math – The class will reinforce the relationship between inches, feet, and yards. We will continue working with money to gain familiarity with coins and symbols. Our daily story problem also continues to be an important way for students to develop their knowledge of math language and problem solving skills.
  • Religion – We will start our preparation for the season of Lent. Students need to continue practicing the Act of Contrition prayer and work towards mastery by the end of the month. They have a copy of this prayer at home and it would be useful for them to say it once a day.
  • Science – Students can go exploring with Mystery Doug to find out how different materials are made. (optional activity on Friday)

Updates for this Week:

  • Faith Family Drawings: Please have your child bring in the drawing they did during Faith Families and turn in to me. I will make sure it gets to the time capsule. 🙂
  • Special Events: We will celebrate Valentine’s Day along with the 100th Day of School this week! On Friday, your child will be home since it is a noon dismissal day. We will have a few different activities on Zoom that morning, including cookie decorating (they will be sent home with supplies on Thursday ).
  • Progress Reports: If your child is experiencing academic or behavioral challenges, I have already been in contact with you and will not be sending a separate progress report at this time.
  • Dates to remember:
    • February 11th: Red, White, and Pink Free Dress Day
    • February 12th: Noon dismissal

    • Wednesday – SLC Card-Making – A member of the SLC will be visiting us during our morning Zoom to lead the kids in making Valentines cards. Students should bring the supplies they would like to use to Morning Zoom.
    • Thursday – Valentine’s Free Dress – Students may wear red, white, and/or pink free dress.
    • Friday – Noon Dismissal – It will be a distance learning day. We will have several Valentine’s activities on Zoom in the morning. Please review the schedule. ️

Last, but not least, your children’s comments about each other in Tuesday’s padlet were delightful and touching. Celebrating Students

Mrs. Serles and I look forward to the week and wish you a lovely one, too!
