Final Second Grade Update and Summer Activities

Dear Soon-To-Be Third Grade Families!

Thank you all for a wonderful year! As I’ve expressed before, thank you so much for the amazing support you gave your children and me this year! While it has been a challenging year of ever-changing schedules, Zoom meetings, and remote work, we have also been blessed to be able to learn together in the classroom again! Mrs. Serles and I have loved seeing your children in person each day! Thank you for trusting us with their education and their safety!

Below is our final week’s schedule as well as suggestions for summer activities.

Schedule for This Week:

This week, we will have fun wrapping up!

  • Monday –
    • Please have your child return their Superkids Reader and their Book Club book (either Zapato Power or The First Case).
    • Students will enjoy a movie together as well as a visit to the ice cream truck! (Free – no money needed)
    • Students may wear free dress and bring a stuffy for the movie if they would like (no blankets, please). 🙂
  • Tuesday –
    • Students may wear fancy free dress.
    • Third grade teacher, Mrs. Costy, will come for a visit to share what students can expect next year! 🙂
    • We will watch a special slideshow to celebrate our year together!
    • Dismissal is at 10:30am. No share and care. Please plan accordingly.

Summer Activities:

As your children start Summer Break, I know many of them are excited to be done with school work and Zoom meetings! I agree, it will be nice for them to relax and enjoy a bit of downtime. 🙂

Before I send them off into the summer sun 😎, I do want to recommend having them spend some time on reading, math, and writing activities. I know it is very important to let kids be kids and have fun in the summer. I also know that your children have worked hard to develop their reading, math, and writing skills, and that maintaining that progress with a minimal amount of academic activities as they approach third grade is important.

While getting kids to do anything academic in the summer can be a challenge 🤣, here’s how I win over my own kids. I share this rationale – there are at least 12 hours each day that they are typically awake. Even if they use just a small amount of that time each day (say 1 hour) on academic activities, that’s pretty reasonable. They agree with me because it’s hard not to! This small amount of time helps them reduce the normal summer slide and feel more prepared when school starts again.

I’ve created the attached list of ideas for your child so they can have it for quick reference. I hope it is helpful, and that your child enjoys the fun and flexibility of the summer months! If you have any questions, need more ideas, etc., you can always reach out to me. 🙂

Mrs. Serles and I wish you many blessings for a safe and happy summer!

Warmly,
Catherine
