Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, March 5,2021

We welcome Mrs. Foster back to our classroom on Monday of this next week. She will work on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I will work on Thursdays and Fridays. We are so grateful to have had Mrs. Frankel working with our students and thank her for her wonderful service to our students and school. She will be missed! ( But I’m sure that we will see her again!)

You will receive your child’s report card on Friday March 19th. The purpose of a report card is to inform the child’s parents of his or her academic progress during the school year.  Standards based skills assessments are used here at St. Philip Neri School in order to evaluate your child. We hope that these report cards will give you an indication of the skills your child has mastered as well as those that they still are working on.

We will continue with our ESGI testing this week in order to continue our assessment process and to guide our planning process.

Our Language Arts SuperKids lessons will now be called  the SuperKids Club. Students will get lots of practice decoding and encoding words as well as recognizing”memory” words. These words are either phonetically irregular or include letter sounds that haven’t been taught yet, so children will need to learn to recognize them by sight. There are also decodable Library books in the SuperKids club which allows students to directly apply their developing reading skills to decodable texts.  Students of all levels will read books that match their skill level.   Don’t worry if your child is not a reader yet. Added practice of at least 20 minutes a week on the Lexia application will benefit your child as it will advance reading skills and prepare them for 1st grade.

Traditionally here at SPN, Kindergarten has performed the story of “Moses” for the student body and then led in a Seder Meal for the school on Holy Thursday of Holy Week.  Since we cannot perform live this year, we will pre-record our production in the next few weeks and then air for all to see. More information to come later.

Don’t forget to have your child work on their March project of writing a story about two friends who have a problem and how they solve it. Books are due on March 26th.Books will be read in class starting on March 29th.

Kai Maekawa is our SuperKid this week.
